Using art to help children

Creativity is a huge part of growing up, so it comes as no surprise that we advise against the stifling of any child’s artistic expression.
Nurseries and play groups are synonymous with potato prints, macaroni art and glitter. These are all great tools for engaging kids and helping them unleash their imagination, yet while they get to indulge here, creativity in home activities is often lacking.
And this is understandable. After a long day at work, us boring adults are reluctant to get the acryllic paints out and make a mess with their kids (especially after cooking the dinner, washing up, doing the laundry, etc) and it’s often argued that they get their fill of this at school. But from the moment they leave their prams, kids have a boundless energy and it’s very difficult to exhaust their creativity!
One suggestion would be to get them to help in cooking. Depending on the age, there are numerous recipes kids love helping out with (rice crispy cakes being the most obvious example) and they’ll be more than satisfied simply assisting mashing potatoes. The great thing in the case of confectionery there are so many simple things to make, yet these can be adorable gifts for the grandparents.
Learning a musical instrument is not something which should be overlooked. Many adults wish they’d taken up a particular instrument sooner and are now seemingly assigned to being ’too old to learn it now’- don’t make the same mistake with your child. Sure, they may lose interest very quickly in the expensive miniature instrument you bought them, but at least they’ll grow up knowing they had the chance.
