Make your own art

It’s not as difficult as it sounds, you know. I’m not going to pretend that I’ve ever created anything in the privacy of my home that could hang on the walls of the Louvre or even be sold for a few quid, but it’s good fun and is a very cheap way to decorate your home! After all, in this age of “make do and mend”, with companies like Enigin PLC trying to save the planet and everyone trying to save some cash, making your own art is practical; and a great way to spend the afternoon.
Get the kids involved, if you have any! I bought a few canvases of different sizes from a local art shop (that was the only big expense, but it was still cheaper than buying any of the paintings that were in the window), a bunch of paints and brushes and we all had a ball. I think the littlest got more paint on her than on the canvas, but she was very proud to hang up the picture she made of a pink rabbit on her wall. Pink rabbits, eh? Hope that’s not a sign she’s going to end up an alcoholic!
My eldest daughter and I took it a bit more seriously, creating works of art on the largest canvases to go in our living room. It’s painted white, so we had carte blanche to use whatever colours we wanted, if you’ll excuse the pun, though we did co-operate to make sure they wouldn’t look hideous next to each other!
I guess you could describe mine as an abstract landscape, but really I just used broad swathes of colours to create the image, covering the whole canvas. My daughter was bit braver, painting shapes and swirls, and even leaving some of the canvas bare! I predict a great career in contemporary art for her…
If you don’t feel brave enough to just jump in at the deep end like that, that are bound to be art classes at a local college near you, or you may be lucky enough to have an arts centre that runs classes in pottery or other crafts; they may even hold sessions specifically for the little ones. If they’re going to become award winning artists, then you need to start them early.
