Provincial Galleries

One of the things that I love about going to see contemporary art outside of London is not just the frantic internet searches for ostelli Londra, but the effort that is made by the curators to make the art accessible to the general public. The Blue coat in Liverpool is an excellent example of this trend in ’Provincial'galleries. It does host some travelling shows, and curates others. The visual art is firmly placed with in the ’contemporary'paradigm. Yet, the Blue coat makes a huge effort to reflect the local as well. Last year they featured a show about Malcolm Lowry, the writer of Under the Volcano. The show was interesting in that it departed from the entirely uber contemporary aesthetic and included a variety of works by artists that were influenced by Lowry. If you go to the Blue coat on a Saturday, you will find one of the greatest gems in art access Explore . From twelve to four on every Saturday there is a hands on art activity that interacts in some way with the current exhibition. The activities themselves vary from very cool to totally difficult and stupid, but there is always a selection of materials that you can simply play with for free. Some of my all time favourites included cut and paste collage masks, and collage cars. They make a serious effort not to fall into the trap that is common at too many galleries of giving colouring in sheets and calling it access to art.
