Kelda

I saw the advertisement in a shop display and I couldn’t resist: a giant Viking puppet girl helping visitors discover the Wirral sounded like the perfect marriage between art and fun. Kelda was the creation of Thingumajig Theatre from West Yorkshire. Thingumajig specialize in giant puppets, parades, engaging puppet arts for adults and walk about performances. It was difficult to decide which of the events to go to, but after a discussion about dates we agreed to head out as a family for Kelda’s appearance at the Lady Lever Art Gallery in Port Sunlight. The Lady Lever has some great resources for families to help children of all ages access the art works, so it seemed like a good choice. Kelda and her friends started their performance with a little song and dance number about the history of the Viking settlement on the Wirral and then they were accompanied by a gallery information specialist for a little tour of the gallery. There were enough appropriate jokes about Kelda bashing in to the art work to keep every person there on their toes. The tour was quite simple, asking the audience to identify things in painting like dogs and different musical instruments. I personally would have like Kelda to engage more with the paintings but given her busy tour schedule and the diversity of the venues that she was meant to visit, I can forgive her for her cursory knowledge of the treasures that are held in the Lady Lever Gallery.
