Sexuality in Art and Music

I was doing a red diesel Halifax comparison when a friend of mine who is into art stopped by home recent and we started talking about sexuality in art and music. Here I share some of what we discovered.
While sexuality has been a taboo subject in recent times, this was not always so. Sexuality has been celebrated since ancient times in art (paintings, sculpture, and ceramics), literature, and music.
The celebration of the human body in all its sensual glory can be seen in ancient Grecian and Roman sculpture, which shows beautiful, nude forms of both men and women. Many great paintings throughout history also celebrate the nude form as well.
Sexuality has also been celebrated in literature since ancient times. India’s The Kama Sutra, from the 4th century, is not only a sex manual, but a religious book and erotic art. Novels from Asia, such as China’s The Plum in the Golden Vase, from the 16th century, is considered a classic, and contains many graphic sex scenes.
Music about sexuality has been documented since ancient times as well. While many have been popular songs created in the vernacular rather than “art”, their existence and enjoyment shows an appreciation of sexuality.
In modern times, artists have continued to celebrate sexuality, though their work is often censored so that viewers under a certain age cannot access them. Sexuality can be found in erotic art like paintings, drawings and sculpture, as well as erotic literature. Popular and literary novels alike depict sexuality, though it may not be as explicit as erotica. Music, too, shows sexuality, though it is often veiled rather than explicit. <
